Wow! Fifth Grade! I knew I always wanted to teach the upper grades. They are so much more independent! The students walk by themselves to many places like the lunch room or the nurse. They do not need much assistance, but I already see this as a problem in the classroom. The teacher realizes they are more independent, but there is one student that is in need of help with some of the work he does. He needs some support, but instead the teacher constantly nags the student for incomplete work. The student is a one year ESOL exit, but I feel he still needs to be apart of the program. When asked an open ended question, he answers by rephrasing the question into a sentence. Sometimes it is so confusing that even he does not know what he wrote. As I noticed this, I tried to make conversation with the student to understand his situation.
The students are only allowed to have recess the days they do not have P.E. This is disturbing! Mostly because they do more work during their "recess time." The students need a break!! I know there are times I look forward to lunch to talk about things other than work. If adults need the time, then students REALLY need it!!
Here's a student's nightmare...

... And we wonder why American children are obese?!
