Live Writing by Ralph Fletcher Ch. 1,2,6
Fletcher is interesting in how he writes his books. He actually talks to the reader, which is different. I enjoyed reading Chapter 6 because I had so many questions. On page 47, Fletcher says, "The problem comes when we try to be other than who we really are, either in our writing or in our personalities." My question: What about CRCT? What about teachers interests? Sometimes students are forced to make up a story because the prompts do not pertain to them! This week my teacher gave the students a prompt about flying an airplane in the 1950s. I get how she wants them to know about the topic, but some of the students have never even been in a plane! I just want to yell because the students would BS the paper. We do that as college students all the time. We can't put "heart" into a project or paper if we are not interested! I know when taking standardized tests, I made up a lot of things in my writing section just to make the paper sound better. Sometimes I did not have the opportunity to "meet someone who has made a difference in my life" or "how it felt when I tried a new activity!" My paper won't have personality if I have no idea what I'm writing about, and this is the same for students.
