Creating Critical Classrooms ch. 4-6

The vignette in chapter 6 talks about different perspectives. This really reminded me of a lesson that I got a chance to do at Nesbit E.S. with Lena. We wanted to the students to learn how to see things in different perspectives. We first read them Little Hoot by Amy Rosenthal. This book was about an owl whose parents make him sleep late. Little Hoot thinks its unfair all his friends get to go to bed early. His parents have to force him to play until the late hours of the night. This book did a great job looking at another perspective. Many of her books are great for that purpose. Next, we had students pick an animal they want to write to. We told them to ask any questions they may have for the animal. Next, we gave students sunglasses. We told them they were now the animal, and they were looking through the eyes of that animal. They were to reply to the letters sent from the 2nd graders. They took on this role really well. They really acted like the animal and wrote some amazing letters. They really got a chance to become another animal and see through their eyes. The sunglasses were cute and really got them into character.
